Here you can find a description of all competitions that Purley members enter that are not part of the external leagues program.
In some cases such as the Surrey and National competitions Purley members are invited to submit their entries to the Club Secretary and they will submit the entries in bulk.
In other cases the competitions are limited to a single player or team from each club, In these cases Purley Bowls Club Committee decide on the players that will be invited to form a team and upon theiur acceptance Purley committee will submit the entry to the competition on the players behallf.

SURREY COMPETITIONS (MEN - AREA 3, LADIES - ZONE 2) | Singles This competition is open to all members, including players who have a Surrey badge. Badged players are among the highest standard players, so in later rounds competition reaches a high level. Unbadged Singles This competition is open to all members except Surrey badge players. 2-Wood Singles (Ladies) All the early rounds are played on one day at a specified venue. Pairs This competition is open to all members. One of the pair usually completes the entry form and lists the second player. Triples This competition is open to all members. One of the triple usually completes the entry form and lists the other two players. Fours This competition is open to all members. NATIONAL COMPETITIONS | Individual members can enter the following national competitions run by Bowls England. PAST TIMES TROPHY (MEN, LADIES) | This competition was originally called The Times Herald Competition (after the newspaper). The men and ladies field 2 rinks which play simultaneously, one at home, one away. ARTHUR HUGHES TROPHY (MEN) | This is a men's triples competition limited to one team from each club affiliated to the Sutton & District Bowls Association. Players must be subscribing members of the clubs they represent. No restriction is placed on the players used, so it is permissible for different players to represent the Club in each round. The Arthur Hughes Trophy was first presented in 1983 to the winners, and from 1984 the runners-up received the Loriwyn Plate. | More Info | Selected by Mens Captain | |
YONWIN CUP (MEN) | The Yonwin Cup started in 1950 after Mr Yonwin (Rosehill BC), whose son died in WWII, offered a trophy for competition by a league of local clubs. The Sutton & District Bowling Association was formed and continues to run the competition. The competition is open to all clubs affiliated to the Association and is played on a knock-out basis. BLESMA Pairs (Men) | Originally set up in 1950 by the secretary of the Sutton & Merton branch of the British Limbless Ex-Service Men’s Association, the competition is now run by the Sutton & District Bowling Association. Proceeds from the competition are donated to the BLESMA home in Blackpool. Paston Cup | The cup was originally presented to Cuddington B.C. by Charles Paston and is inscribed - “In memory of the lads, including my son, Ronald, who spent their younger days on the sports grounds in the Borough of Sutton and Cheam and would have possibly become our future bowlers, but who lost their lives during the war (1939 - 1945)”. After 1955 the cup was offered to the Sutton & District Bowling Association for competition between current champions and runners-up of clubs affiliated to the Surrey and District BA. | More Info | ||
Croydon Postal Mixed Pairs | The competition was originally set up in 1973 by Bob Goodwin (Delivery Office Manager at Thornton Heath) and Walter Reed (Assistant Head Postmaster at Croydon), and is organised by the Post Office Sports & Social Club, to encourage mixed bowling. It is open to clubs affiliated to the Borough of Croydon Bowling Association, Sutton & District Bowling Association, and other invited clubs. The winners receive a cheque and the Walter Reed Shield; the runners-up receive a cheque and the Bob Goodwin Bowl. There are also prizes for 3rd and 4th place. | |||
St Raphael’s Cup (Mixed Pairs) | This competition started in 2004 because the Sisters, members of a nursing and teaching order founded in Belgium in 1883 ‘for the education of girls, and the care of the sick’, were celebrating their centenary at their hospice in North Cheam. The winners’ cup was donated by Ken Shopland of Carshalton B.C. The finalists’ cup was donated by Denis Austin of Worcester Park B.C.
