a rink for a competition - Priorities
document is an addendum to the document entitled “Playing Bowls at Purley Bowls
Club 2021” distributed to members on 27th May 2021 and defines the
priorities for “Booking a rink for a competition or “roll-up with
friends”. This has been deemed necessary because of recent congestion in
rink bookings, particularly on Ballot days.
the current situation:-
1)We have a comprehensive fixtures
schedule which includes league and friendly matches with other clubs and the
club has also entered several knockout competitions;
2)We have reintroduced Ballots on
Monday & Friday afternoons and Sunday mornings.
3)We have many competitors in our
internal competitions; and
4)An increased number of members have
entered Surrey & National competitions this year – some of these
competitions have “play by” dates and others have “play on” dates.
demands on rinks means that we need to ensure that that we utilise our rinks
efficiently so that we do not disenfranchise any members.
currently operating 2-hour booking slots as follows:
(a)10:30am – 12:30am;
(b)12:45pm – 2:45pm;
(c)3:00pm – 5:00pm;
Half hour gap in case an afternoon inter-club fixture
(d)5:30pm – 7:30pm.
On days where
there are no inter-club matches the above booking slots should be adhered to so
that we can maximise the green utilisation to 24 bookable slots. On days
when there is an afternoon inter-club match or a Ballot, booking slots (b)
& (c) (on the rinks allocated to the inter-club match/Ballot session ) will
be unavailable for internal and external bookings. [However, the rinks
allocated for an inter-club match can be used up to 1:30pm and the rinks
allocated for Ballots can be used from 4:30pm, giving some flexibility on the
start times for booking slots (a) and (d).]
priorities for rink bookings are as follows:-
1.The interclub match rink
2.The Ballot requirements (4 rinks on Monday
and Friday afternoons; and 2 Rinks on Sunday mornings). However, see *
3.Surrey and National play-on dates
4.Internal competition play-on dates
5.Other Surrey & National matches
6.Other Internal competition matches
The Ballots are popular with newer
members and members who prefer not to play in inter-club matches and so we need
to continue to provide the planned 4 rinks for Ballot sessions (2 rinks on a
Sunday morning) whenever possible. Occasions may arise when, if there is
no alternative (e.g. heavy demand for rinks on a Surrey/National play-on date),
it may be necessary to curtail or cancel the Ballots on a particular day.
However, even on Ballot days there
are still 12 bookable slots (6 in the morning and 6 in the evening) so only in
exceptional circumstances should we be forced to curtail the Ballots. As
regards booking slots (b) & (c), on Mondays there is one rink available for
booking and on Fridays there are at most two rinks available for booking.
These booking slots should only be used for Surrey and National Play-on dates
but only as a last resort; Internal competitions should not utilise booking
slots (b) and (c) on Mondays and Fridays as they may be needed for Surrey and
If a member has a compelling reason why he/she needs to book
a slot that has been denied him/her then he/she should contact the Captain who
has the authority to override the above guidelines.
